We are working on table manners in our house, big time! We try to sit down as a family every night and eat together. And we are really enjoying it now that we have a "real table" :-)
Our other table was doing fine, (although it felt like it could break any day, and it wasn't the most attractive with all the marker and fork marks on it) Another thing about it was that we needed our folding chairs out in order for all of us to fit and there is one chair that "squeaks" when you sit on it, so Ryan has named it the "toot chair." So the opportunity came up for us to buy a hand me down table from Joe's uncle and we jumped at the chance.
Anyways, back to the table manners...
We rarely go out to eat as a family, one because of the expense and two (probably the bigger reason, is that they are too much work to keep them from being complete monkeys while we are out in public)
So now that the girls have "matured" a little turning 4, the concept is sinking in a bit more.
We have a sticker chart and if they can use their manners and eat appropriately for 7 nights then we will go out for ice cream or something, then if they can fill the rest of the chart up we will go out to dinner as a family. Which is completely thrilling to them. Me too, I love going out to eat, and rarely get to do it. It's MORE enjoyable without little ones in tow, but hey, if they behave, I'll give it a try! :-) We have a restrauant in town called "Grandpa John's" and they are fascinated by it and want to go there so bad, becuase they have a "Grandp John" too. We ususally only do go out when Grandma Kathy is in town so we can have "man to man defense"
I would love for them to learn this concept,
because these are the things we usually end up saying at the table:
"Please, sit in your chair"
"Please close your mouth if you have to burp"
if they do burp or toot....."What do you say?"
"Please use your fork to eat"
"Please don't bang your fork or cup or plate!"
"Please get off of the table"
"Please sit on your bottom"
"Please use a napkin and not your shirt!"
"Please eat the bread before I give you MORE butter"
"No "obbie" at the table" (it's a show called obbie, where they are all puppets using their hands)
"Please keep your hands to yourself, and don't touch your brother/sister"
"Please no potty words at the table"
"I don't want to see your food while you eat it"
And of course....."EAT!!!"
I'm sure there are more but that is all that is coming to me right now! haha
Wish us luck! Hopefully we will be going out for ice cream soon :-)
